SATURDAY 28th APRIL is WORKERS MEMORIAL DAY …. a day to remember all the workers, worldwide who died whilst earning a crust. Every worker who ever died whilst working will be remembered today. Not by the Capitalist system that used their labour to make profit…the supporters of that system will not even be aware that people die whilst working…maybe remembered as an inconvenience that shows the short cuts they made in Health and safety need to be tightened up before the law catches up with them…However they died, they will be remembered by those close to them, those who matter…..RIP….
WEDNESDAY 25TH APRIL….1030HRS.
As the race for City Hall (LONDON) intensifies, Boris Johnson, Ken Livingstone, Brian Paddick and Jenny Jones clashed over transport fares, crime and phone hacking….what a rude plonker Boris Johnson is…how did the people of London ever vote for him in the first place??? As a Yorkshire bloke, I don’t have a lot of interest in the power struggle taking place in the South Eastern corner of England. If the people really want an inept, boorish and, IMHO, a rather stupid politician called Boris running the capital, then they deserve all they get !!….In the televised debate, Boris was totally destroyed, not by Ken Livingstone, but by himself !!! At one point Boris (henceforth called DORIS) was actually arguing against the manifesto his office had produced !!! ….is that inept or is that inept??? I wouldn’t want a person like DORIS running the show up here in Sheffield…he would get more than a pint of flat beer poured over his head…’It’s grim up North’ Doris. Brian Paddick’s record got a bit stuck in the , “I spent 30 Years in the Met police” groove….is that something to be proud of ???. Jenny Jones bless her, looked as though she had been messing with the plug sockets…or some other piece of electrical equipment !!!. One thing in her favour is that the policies she was promoting, were indeed GREEN . Ken Livingstone was getting a bit fed up of Doris interrupting and spluttering, but for me, Mr Livingstone offered a believable transport policy if nothing else could be believed…Come on you Londoners…vote Ken in …if you vote for Doris Johnson, you deserve all you get…Do I see riots in the future ??…I am afraid to predict as my witterings are now read by a faceless drone somewhere in the secret service …..I’ll leave you with a line from the Kaiser Chiefs hit…………………………………………………..?
A VERY APT FOLLOW ON ARTICLE from my previous RED BOX post, AFFORDABLE HOUSING……. It now seems that the policies of this fascist Tory led coalition excuse for a government are beginning to bite where it hurts…right at the heart of the most vulnerable in society. It appears that if you live in the borough of NEWHAM , belong to the poorest group of residents living in private rented accommodation and claim housing benefit, then you are not wanted there because the Council will not pay out the housing benefit required to keep a roof over your head…They (the Council) say they can’t afford to supplement the spiraling rent charged by private landlords because of the government cap on housing benefit. The cap being effective at £250 per week for a one bed flat, rising to £400 per week for a four bed house. The situation is being made worse by people in inner London being forced to join the scramble for ‘social housing’ in places like Newham…Outer London. Newham alone has a council housing waiting list of over 35,000, so that will be GREATLY increased as less viable economic refugees are squeezed out of the central boroughs and head for the suburbs….. The comedic spectre of the Lord Mayor of London,
Puss in Boots, sorry, Boris Johnson, says , he doesn’t want a situation developing like in PARIS where the poor people have been squeezed out into the suburbs…..WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE, BORIS….IT’S ALLREADY HAPPENING…THE BOROUGH OF NEWHAM ARE TRYING TO OFFLOAD 500 FAMILIES TO STOKE ON TRENT !!!!!!….. Incidentally, the housing association involved in Stoke on Trent have refused to take them even though Newham have offered to pay 60% of the benefit plus £60 for every family moved out of the borough….Linking to the ‘Affordable Housing’ article …..‘WHAT AFFORDABLE HOUSING ????’ ….
It is surely a sign of the times to come….the thin end of the wedge…The centre of our cities will become the preserve of the wealthy and the growing number of upwardly mobile young professionals …who don’t want to see the ‘poor’ wandering the streets around them !! …What on Earth do the politicians who make up these laws and rules, which devastate both communities and individuals, think they are playing at?? For playing they are !! They seem to have absolutely no concept of how ordinary people exist in (their) self centred, myopic vision of what’s decent and just in life. Even some of their own back bench MPs have started to complain about the way the cabinet are performing.
Today Tory MP Nadine Dorries launched into an extraordinary attack on him and George Osborne by branding them ‘arrogant posh boys’ who ‘don’t know the price of milk’. Mrs Dorries told the BBC’s Daily Politics show: ‘There is a very tight narrow clique of a certain group of people and what they do is act as a barrier and prevent Cameron and Osborne and others from actually really understanding or knowing what is happening in the rest of the country.….Well said Mrs Dorries, though my words would have been stronger.
Some of the residents of NEWHAM don’t even have that choice now. Some say it’s the Labour party, (Newham Council) simply electioneering all ready….what I say is that Newham Council should be making a stand against this coalition of a mess and should be supported by the Labour party and all others to the left of fascism…..Councils CAN stand against the government….remember what LIVERPOOL did when they stood against Thatcher’s mob. Whatever this Fascist Tory led government are doing with this sceptred Isle…it is not working…taxes UP…wages…DOWNN..(ok, if you want to be pedantic, wages are frozen, but that is a cut in real terms…as the politicians would say !!) The Fuel duty alone is crippling the country !!!! Can they see that ??? of course they bloody can’t….fuel is a cash cow for them and they milk it every budget…and in between !! The domestic fuel costs are rocketing out of control and no one seems to mind at all….WELL I MIND CAMERON !!! I never thought it would happen to me but I now put on extra clothes instead of the heating. The choice is…pay the rent or have the heating on.
There are answers to the problem, it’s not rocket science….invest in a national program of building decent council run homes, not houses for sale but for the poorer sections of society to rent.
I’ll take a closer look at those proposals at a later date, but for now let the clarion call sound out to organise and let our elected representatives know that decent people deserve a decent home and the city Centres are not the playground of the wealthy and the upwardly mobile young professionals, that the poorest sections of society should not be displaced and moved on to other, cheaper parts of the UK. These are dark days indeed if we turn a blind eye to the events now taking place in NEWHAM…..

Just when I thought it safe to take off my boots and relax … The call came from mum for help with dad….He had collapsed in the bathroom, could we come down. So Chris and I dropped everything and rushed round to dad’s place. It didn’t look good when we arrived, Dad was unconscious and unresponsive…it was a no brainer, I rang 999, Chris helped mum to get some things together for him and before you could say, “Where are they?”, the paramedics were driving up the road closely followed by the ambulance….those guys and gals are so efficient and quick, they make your nose bleed. That was at about 1000hrs this morning and I’m sitting here again in A&E at 1730hrs playing the waiting, waiting, waiting game. The docs seem to think it is something to do with his heart, and after all the x-rays and blood tests, we are waiting for the cardiologist to give his verdict. Dad has recovered somewhat and is alternating sleep and conversation with mum and Chris…so it’s waiting, waiting, waiting again…seems so familiar now. Not that we begrudge our numb bums, curly canteen sandwiches and weak tea…we’d do anything for dad, and this is what ‘Family’ is all about.
The place is getting really full now with all manner of people and injuries. Lots of work related accidents, lots of elderly people with arms in slings and limping and a few people like myself, who are just playing the waiting, waiting, waiting game and/or, just people watching….All the seats are full now, it will be interesting to see how many of the more able bodied people will give their seats up for the more infirm…not many, I suspect. We will continue waiting, waiting, waiting and watching….BRB….Time 2000 hrs and we are going home now. They are keeping dad in for observation, he looks quite poorly bless him. I think this will be the last ‘Day in A&E’ entry for this blogger as I can’t concentrate with worrying about dad’s welfare …. there are plenty of other places to people watch, and wait, wait, wait.

The whole bloody country seems to have gone Olympic mad !!! Well not All the country, but mainly the people who live in or near London…or those who live elsewhere and can afford the return rail fair for a family…or those lucky enough to have won the ticket lottery. There seems to be a very visible North/South split regarding the Olympic Mania that is sweeping the country. I didn’t apply for any tickets because I couldn’t afford any…I was priced out of watching them by Mr Coe and company. If, as I mentioned earlier, I could have afforded the tickets, I would have been stumped by the prohibitively high return rail costs (Sheffield to London) and of course the fact that every bed and breakfast, hotel, guest house and private house with a spare room has hiked up the prices to the highest seen in the capital since Princess Diana’s funeral…..The politicians make me laugh when they say, “…But the communities where the events are taking place will benefit enormously from the the Olympic legacy.” …excuse me!!…benefit enormously from the Olympic waters ports complex!!?? How can they say that when, for Joe Public, the cost to utilise the complex will be three times more than the four pools they closed in the borough because they couldn’t afford to run them in the first place !!! ….Community Leisure Centres are closing at a great rate of knots. Just about every community in the country has had local leisure centres closed in order to save money due to the cuts imposed on our Councils by the Coalition government…”Dumb and Dumber” ..or what???….The politicians tell us that, as a nation, we need to be fitter, less obese and a lot healthier than we currently are….it is a joke that the major corporate sponsor of the Olympics is Mcfat Donald’s ….is that double standards and money talking, or does it make sense ??? To me it doesn’t. And how will the Olympic facilities benefit anyone living in Doncaster in the North of England, or Goven in Glasgow ….no doubt if people show Olympic grade talent at a sport they will get a lottery grant to use the facilities, but for the vast majority of us, we can only dream.
Personally, I feel that if people want to get patriotic, wave a Union Jack and say to the world, “Look what we can do with £9.6 billion”…let them get on with it. Just bear in mind that NO project as big as the Olympic project has ever….in all history…come in on or under budget. Experts will testify that the final cost of the games is more than likely to be in the region of £12-15 billion. In these times of austerity and “All being in it together” and tightening our belts by cutting public spending and shedding jobs, slashing the NHS to the bone to make way for back door privatisation, it is all rather a waste of TAXPAYERS money. Whilst one person’s ideal dream is to make our nation great by winning a few gold medals (and I would love to see us at the top of the medal table)…my ideal dream would be to spend the forecasted £12-15 billion on making the National Health Service, once again, the envy of the free world, and totally free at the point of need. I would willingly pay extra taxes for that dream. And for those who say , “we can’t afford it” … I say, “Stop fighting wars abroad that are un-winnable and start fighting wars at home that ARE very winnable..ie, rescuing the National Health Service, Giving the youth some hope of employment and a trade, and make it easier to start some manufacturing industries like the successful reopening of the knickers factory by MARY PORTAS….it can be done. Until another time my friends, may your God keep you safe and thanks for reading my blog….

I can well remember the day , many years ago when, as a small boy, I witnessed the joy of my parents as we moved out of our private rented house and took delivery of a brand new, never been lived in by anyone else, Council house…24, Lowedges Drive, Sheffield 8….it had a luxurious bathroom with a wash hand basin, Bath and a toilet…three spacious bedrooms, modern kitchen and a huge back garden. It even had a brick built flowerpot on the front of the house. I thought it was quite ‘posh’. It was a brand new housing estate with country side at the bottom of the road. We had ‘arrived’. We had a relatively good life there..grew up ..moved on to different areas of Sheffield, always in a council rented property….more time passed and in 1979, a dark cloud passed over the United Kingdom. Her name was ‘Margaret Hilda Thatcher’…a name that most working class people choke on because of her governments relentless attacks on workers and their rights. Aside from her single handed destruction of the working man’s trade unions, which could fight for the worker’s rights and conditions of employment, one of the most harmful things she ever did was to make it the Tory party policy to allow Council house tenants to purchase the houses they rented from the councils where they lived. She talked a lot about the fact that an ‘Englishman’s home is his castle’, people had the right to purchase the council houses at a discounted price and this gave way to the lie that if you owned your own house you were in effect, middle class and you had dragged yourself up from the working class…you were an owner of ‘property’.
Many people fell for this without realising what effect the practice of buying the council house stocks would have on future generations. Or, if they did realise what effect it would have, they didn’t care. That attitude has been attributed directly to the Thatcher ideology of me, me, me, and greed is good…up yours Jack, I’m alright !!….well…we are reaping the benefits of that Tory policy in this present day and age with a chronic shortage of housing stock and massive waiting lists of people who cannot afford to buy a house…and that number grows day by day. Many people, of all ages are forced into the private housing market, where landlords supply houses at high rents for their own profit, and we all know how it works don’t we ?…no repairs on the houses means more profit, no improvements means more profit and we finish up living in virtual squalor for the benefit of a profit seeking landlord. Unless of course you manage to get a benevolent landlord with a bit of a social conscience …and finding one of those is like trying to find rocking horse droppings !!!
Decent living accommodation provided by the people for the people is a social necessity and not a frivolous product of a more socially oriented society of a bygone age. Young people who are newly married and starting out on their lives, people on a low income, the unemployed who can’t find money for a deposit, let alone a mortgage, people who are pensioners and can’t afford a mortgage….the list of people disenfranchised from a decent standard of living by the government, and not only governments of a blue hue either…was it not LORD (that’s a laugh for a so called socialist, is it not?) Prescot, who sanctioned the wholesale demolition of thousands of council properties…then quickly shelved the plans to build ‘Affordable Housing’ to replace them???? The Affordable housing he refers to, is of course, housing for SALE, not rentable from the Council, but for sale, and the small percentage of housing not for sale is owned by ‘Housing associations’….The choice is stark is it not, for people who can’t afford, for whatever reason, to purchase a dwelling to live in…either pay a private landlord a high rent and rely on an ever dwindling public fund to provide rent and council tax relief, or tough it out and wait for another 15-20 years for a council house…….OR…..stop fighting illegal wars, and unwinnable wars which are costing the tax payers countless millions and invest in a public works program to build decent housing for people to rent off their local councils…problem solved for generations to come….And some people don’t like Socialism ?????….why the hell not?
I would imagine there will be some very anti comments to this post from people of a differing political standpoint…well bring it on !!…just remember what I said in the blurb about the Red Box…these are MY views and it matters not a jot that you disagree with them, what does matter, is that we have a platform on which to disagree and debate these issues……….. This is a very important issue for me and so I needed to shout about it…stay safe people.
A few housing facts to back up my claims..(information taken from Charitable groups and Housing charities)
7.7 million homes in England fail to meet the government’s Decent Homes Standard
1.6 million children in Britain live in overcrowded, temporary or run down accomodation
The average weekly rent in 2009-10 was £156 for private renters and £75 for social renters
Almost 50% of local housing allowance claimnents face rent shortfalls-averaging £100 per month
across LONDON homelessness is up by 27.4%
4 million children live in poverty after housing costs have been paid
33% of private renters had lived in their homes for less that 1 year
Birmingham..highest number of homeless people , 925 households
8550 households are homeless because their short lease came to an end.
37% annual increase in number of people being housed in bed and breakfast accommodation
Housing affordability measures show that housing is unaffordable in ALL 33 UK regions
WELL…here we are again in A&E with Dad…for those of you who didn’t read my previous A&E blog, this is the second time I’ve landed here in as many weeks and whilst the Women in my life are with dad in his cubicle waiting … waiting … waiting for the hard pressed NHS doctor to arrive, I’m in the A&E waiting area, people watching ( well there is never much else to do is there ?) and as usual there are the normal ‘motley’ crew in attendance. It’s rather quieter than last time I was here, probably due to the fact that it is EASTER SUNDAY and every one NOT here is on the great Easter egg hunt. The first person of note is a young woman, about 17 years old. Let’s for arguments sake say she is called Mary Smith…if she had a middle name she would be called Mary ‘WHO POURED ME INTO THESE TROUSERS’ Smith. Believe you me she leaves nothing to the imagination ….it’s as if she had purple skin below the waist and was going around naked…it’s enough to make my glasses steam up !!!! But, of course, it’s not polite to stare, is it ? You just can’t help noticing she hasn’t even got a thong on !!! She is here with her girlfriend who is sporting a cracking black eye along with a half rubbed off Henna arm painting and several fading night club exit passes stamped on both wrists…however, we are non judgemental at this blog and can’t comment on the story behind the henna arm scrolls and the no knickers syndrome….someone else will come in soon that is worthy of observation….until then, I’ll be waiting … waiting … waiting for my bum to go numb…..be back shortly…
Well it’s now 12 noon and we are still playing the ‘W’ game…waiting for blood test results and an elderly chap has come into the waiting area with a mass of bruising on his face and his head swathed in blood stained bandages. His story is that he was mugged up at the tram stop at Manor Top and repeatedly kicked in the head. It certainly looks like he had a right royal kicking. Turns out it was a young lad, about 15/16 years old who took a fancy his mobile phone and didn’t like the fact that he was old and couldn’t defend himself ….what is this world coming to? That’s bad even for the Manor estate in Sheffield….. Short break now whilst I relieve my numb nether regions……
1pm now and the place is filling up…first sporting injuries arriving…a goalkeeper with a VERY swollen and lacerated head….mind you, being a goalkeeper of some note in my younger days, I know that all goalkeepers are a little bit MAD !! So I can equate with his injuries. the other footballer is a left full back using his baggy shirt as a makeshift sling. At first I thought he was a from Japan or Korea, but he looked like that because he was grimacing with pain… It looked as though he had been steamrollered by a huge centre forward…ouch!!!…..
The ‘W’ game goes on….now we are waiting…waiting…waiting for a bed in the assessment ward for dad as the hospital are going to keep him in for a few days…he is not a happy bunny. ….. Another goalkeeper with teeth missing and a very fat pair of lips with stud marks in them….that has got to hurt…a lot !!!..Oh !! And another goalkeeper with his leg in a splint….that proves all goalkeepers are mad because he is smiling a lot !!!!
Well, at home now getting ready for evening visiting…they are going to keep Dad in for a few days and get a lung specialist to see him…he is NOT a happy bunny this Easter…….That’s it for another day in the life of a ‘Steel City’ man…Stay safe people and for all the Detached Youth Workers out there….. ” Fill your cleats” and be careful, it’s a jungle out there !!!

So….Big Brother rears his ugly head again. Parliament is set to debate the introduction of a huge expansion of the powers of the state to read all our ‘e’ mails, mobile phone texts and even observe what sites we visit when we browse the world wide web. Do you want someone tracking all the websites you visit as you browse ? Do you want some faceless security bod to read the ‘e’ mails you send to your son, daughter, mother or father ? Or listen in to confidential business meetings ? I know I don’t. I think it is a step too far and an infringement of civil rights. It’s no good saying, “Well, if you’ve done nothing wrong, you’ve nothing to fear”. That only works in an ideal world…and this world aint ideal. The Tories talk about rolling back the state, and then they say they are going to introduce Big Brother to tighten the screws on the public even more. Mr posh Cameron and the so called coalition, has had a bad few days this week, what with deliberately (IMHO) causing a national panic buying spree of fuel..did they mention that the tax revenue earned in just one day was £32 million as they tried to discredit a not yet announced strike by tanker drivers.(Their tactics were a transparent, sordid attempt to turn public opinion against men and women who are protesting at the bad work practice of management trying to save money by cutting corners in health and safety and making the job more dangerous than it is…not only for the tanker drivers but, more importantly, the public, and of course don’t forget ‘PASTYGATE’…I’m not even going to go there !!!)…..Back to BIG BROTHER , live at the GCHQ… If I remember rightly the labour government also tried to introduce the same thing and a massive surge of public opinion stopped it dead in it’s tracks. We must do the same again and not let the Tories force this despicable legislation on us. I just can’t grasp where posh Cams is coming from with this….but I can guess where it will take him……
ANOTHER test post to see if the ‘RED BOX’ has been opened so I can drop notes in …..I mentioned briefly on Twitter about how disappointed I was with Question Time on the Beeb Thia last week…..I looked down the guest list and, other than the odd capitalist (Tory) and a Government minister (Tory) and a Lib Dem (Tory) There was Alexie Sayle … Pro Marxist. This will stir things up I thought…did it??? … most disappointingly not…he was very quiet, hardly said a word in fact..has he conformed in his old age? or has he just lost the Socialist fire in his belly since he became a big shot author and journalist ????
JUST another test post to iron out a few kinks in the aesthetics of this blog. Tha fact that I’m a technophobe of the first order, means that I have to see with my own eyes that the technology I employ, all be it a very low level, is actually working….
WHEN YOU WISH UPON A STAR….
I Wish I May, I Wish I Might
The native English speakers among this blog’s readers will recognize the following little nursery rhyme:
Star light, star bright,
The first star I see tonight;
I wish I may, I wish I might,
Have the wish I wish tonight.
The words “may” and “might” can be pretty confusing. When should you use one vs. the other? Consider a sentence like “We may go to the game, depending on the weather,” which is hard to place as either more or less correct than the sentence “We might go to the game, depending on the weather.” Garner tells us that the words “occupy different places on a continuum of possibility,” with “may” expressing likelihood and “might” expressing “a stronger sense of doubt.”
So our word choice in the sentence pair above actually depends on the weather! If the weather has been gray but seems to be clearing up with a good chance of making for a good game night, then you “may” go to the game. If dark clouds are rolling in, then you “might” go.
When using one of these conditional words with a negating sentence, it’s generally going to be best to go with “might” because “may not” can be confused with “cannot,” which has a slightly different meaning.
Understanding that the two words exist along a continuum of possibility makes the little nursery rhyme a bit more poignant, for the speaker seems at first in less doubt and then in more as to the likelihood of her wish’s being granted, lending to that third line a growing sense of doubt, pathos, and urgency.
